These are the same day plans from our full itinerary, in the order we'd run them for a 2-day stay. Mix and match freely — nothing here is precious.
Day 1
Arrive & land softly
Grocery stop en route (Duluth for the big run). Unload, walk the property, flights at North Shore Winery a few minutes away, an easy dinner (Moguls if it's open; Cascade Lodge as the always-open fallback), then the fire pit and the stars.
Winter swap: gear sorted into the garage racks, thermostats up, an early night before a first-tracks morning.
Day 2
Grand Marais day (~20–25 min)
Early: World's Best Donuts (in season — remember Tue/Wed) or Java Moose. Walk Artist's Point, browse the harbor shops, peek into North House. Lunch at the Fisherman's Daughter or Hungry Hippie. Afternoon on the shore hunting agates. Dinner at the Angry Trout (seasonal) or the Gun Flint Tavern, with a rooftop nightcap at Voyageur.
Rainy swap: galleries, North House, the Cook County museum, and a long lunch turn a wet day into a good one.
Sleeps 12 · 5 bedrooms · eight wooded acres, three miles from Lutsen Mountains. Book direct for the best available rate.
Common questions
What can you do in a weekend at Lutsen?
A two-day Lutsen weekend usually starts with an easy arrival day: a grocery stop en route, a walk of the property, wine flights at North Shore Winery a few minutes away, and an easy dinner at Moguls or Cascade Lodge, then the fire pit and the stars. The second day is a Grand Marais day, about 20 to 25 minutes away, with early donuts, a walk out to Artist's Point, the harbor shops, an afternoon hunting agates on the shore, and dinner in town. You can mix and match the two days freely to suit the weather.
How far is Lutsen Mountains from the lodge?
The lodge sits on eight wooded acres, three miles from Lutsen Mountains, which is roughly a ten-minute drive. Grand Marais is about 20 to 25 minutes in the other direction. That puts both the mountain and the harbor town within easy reach even on a short weekend stay.
Is a two-day North Shore trip worth it?
A two-day stay is enough to land softly and still get a full Grand Marais day, which covers the harbor town, Artist's Point, the shops, and a shore afternoon hunting agates. It works best if you keep the plan loose and let the weather decide the order. For a southbound waterfall day or a day on the mountain, you would want to add more time.
