Family-run since 1969, five generations behind the counter. The signature is the Skizzle — stretched yeast dough, deep-fried, rolled in sugar. The New York Times and NPR both took the bait on the name and conceded the point.
The move is a morning event, not a snack stop: get there early, order a Skizzle warm, add a maple long john, and walk a block to eat it looking at the harbor. The cake donuts are the ones people drive back for. When they sell out, they close — plan around it.

A North Shore fixture since 1928 and the handiest stop in Lutsen itself: fuel, groceries, coffee and homemade pasties under one roof. Not a sit-down dinner — but on a travel day, or when someone needs feeding on the way to the hill, it earns its keep.

The fry-bread shell is the whole story — huge, and nothing like a standard taco. Regulars go smoked brisket; the Northern Gringo with spiced beef is the crowd favorite. Generous portions for North Shore prices, and the line moves.

The North Shore's famous pie stop since the 1950s, and the natural break on any southbound day toward Split Rock or Duluth. It's around an hour and a quarter from the lodge, roughly, so plan it into a day trip south rather than a dinner run. The move is a slice at the counter and a whole pie in the car for the lodge.

Sunset on the rooftop with a flight is a Grand Marais rite. The curds are non-negotiable; the smoked herring is the adventurous order. One of the few breweries up here with real table service.

Convenience is the headline: after a mountain day, this is the no-driving-back-to-town option. Honest reviews — solid apps (curds, walleye cakes), pricier than the food strictly earns, consistently friendly service. Go for the ease and the taproom, not a destination meal.

Be clear-eyed: the food is chalet food — burgers, dogs, nachos. The view is the meal, and reviewers still call it a must-do, especially in fall color. Buy gondola tickets online ahead; the resort is cash-free.

A worth-the-drive stop rather than an everyday option: the 1920s lodge whose dining room is painted floor to ceiling in a Cree-inspired design, one of the North Shore's singular rooms. Pair it with Devil's Kettle across the highway and it anchors a day trip north. The room is the reason to go; confirm hours first, because the season has gaps.

Where the grown-ups sneak off while the rest of the group runs the shuffleboard tournament. Walleye cakes and the lake view anchor the reviews; entrées reach steakhouse territory. The one real reservation culture on this stretch of shore.

Worth knowing if you're driving up from the south and want to arrive fed rather than cooking at nine at night: a proper dining room over the water — white linen, local ingredients — with pub fare alongside it. The southern end of the stretch we'd point you to.

Dock-to-table fish out of a converted fishing shanty on the harbor, with an actual sustainability manifesto (they wrote a book about it). No reservations — call 15 minutes ahead to get on the list. An automatic 20% service charge applies.
Ask ten people for the best restaurant on the North Shore and most say the Trout. Fresh Lake Superior herring and whitefish, house-made everything, harbor-edge tables. Expect a summer wait; order whatever was caught that morning off the chalkboard.

Wine + cider flights, live-music nights, art on the walls.
The easy first-evening move: flights on the patio, live music if you time it, a bottle to carry back for the fire. The bourbon-barrel wines and the Temperance white are the ones people take home.
Verified July 2026: Charlie's Alpine Bistro reopened in July 2025 as the rebuilt Papa Charlie's (467 Ski Hill Road, (218) 663-7281 — breakfast 7–11 AM, dinner from 3 PM). Lockport Marketplace & Grille is trading in Lutsen village on the south side of Highway 61. Both are in the listings above.
A note on the stretch south of us. Between Silver Bay and Schroeder the options thin right out, and several are seasonal. If you're driving up and want a real meal on the way, the dining room at Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay is the reliable one. Silver Bay itself has a pizza place, a grille and a well-regarded burger and barbecue spot just off the highway — worth a look on your phone as you pass, since hours move around.
