Lutsen is one of those rare places that's genuinely good for families year-round. In winter it's the Midwest's largest ski area; in summer it's lift-served mountain biking, hiking, and Lake Superior. The trick to a great family weekend is keeping the activity close and the home comfortable.
Friday: arrive and settle
Roll in, unpack, and let everyone spread out. If you're skiing, sort rentals and lift tickets the night before so the morning is easy. A group dinner at the house beats wrangling a big table at a restaurant.
Saturday: the main event
- Winter: a full day at Lutsen Mountains. Younger kids and beginners have their own terrain; the gondola gives non-skiers a reason to come along for the views over Lake Superior.
- Summer/fall: hike a section of the Superior Hiking Trail, ride lift-served trails, or spend the day on the water and at the waterfalls along Highway 61.
Come back midday if you have little ones — one of the best things about a private house is the easy reset.
Saturday night: stay in
This is where a big house earns its keep. A game room, a fireplace, and a fire pit turn the evening into its own event — no packing everyone back into the car.
Sunday: one more, then home
A few morning runs or a short hike, a slow breakfast, and a waterfall stop on the way out.
Make it easy: one house for everyone
The single biggest upgrade to a family weekend is staying together. Nordhus Lodge sleeps 12 across five bedrooms with a game room and gathering spaces, minutes from the slopes. For more on the area, see the Lutsen guide and where to stay near Lutsen Mountains.
