The Superior Hiking Trail runs more than 300 miles along the ridgeline above Lake Superior — and Lutsen sits in the heart of its best-loved stretch. You don't hike the whole thing; you drive ten or fifteen minutes, climb to an overlook, and come home for dinner. Nordhus is built for exactly that.

Honest notes for the trail
The SHT is a real footpath, not a paved walk — expect roots, rock, mud after rain, and steady climbs to the overlooks. Wear real shoes, carry water, and start early on fall weekends, when the Oberg lot fills by mid-morning. Summer brings bugs in the low, wet stretches (a head net earns its keep in June). The reward is the same every time: you break out of the forest onto open rock, and the whole sweep of Lake Superior opens up below you.

Beyond the SHT
Two hikes off the main trail
The best-known hike near Lutsen that is not on the Superior Hiking Trail is Eagle Mountain, Minnesota's highest point, inland at the edge of the Boundary Waters. To be clear, this is not the Eagle Mountain ski peak at Lutsen Mountains; the state highpoint is a different hill of the same name, a roughly 7-mile round trip past Whale Lake with a self-issued BWCA day permit at the trailhead. Up the Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais, Honeymoon Bluff is a short, steep stair climb to a cliff over Hungry Jack Lake, best at sunset if you have the drive back in you.
