Before you go: a Minnesota state park vehicle permit is $7/day or $35/year and covers every state park. Two quirks worth knowing: the main lots at Gooseberry Falls and Tettegouche are highway waysides — free to park and walk to the falls; you pay only to drive deeper in. Groomed cross-country skiing in state parks needs the Great Minnesota Ski Pass (16+).
The anchors
Lutsen Mountains — the Midwest's largest ski area (~1,000 acres, four mountains, ~95 runs), now on the Ikon Pass. Summer & fall: the Summit Express Gondola to Moose Mountain (season roughly May–Oct, extended fall-color hours) and the alpine slide on Eagle Mountain (the ski peak, not the state highpoint of the same name, see the summer guide; waiver required, book online, cash-free resort). Fall-color weekends draw crowds — the resort itself warns about gondola lines before close.
Superior Hiking Trail — 300+ miles along the ridgeline, with access points all along this stretch. Four trailheads sit within easy reach of the lodge, south to north by Highway 61 milepost:
- Oberg Mountain — MP 86.1, up Onion River Road (gravel) 2 miles. Overlook after overlook; the fall-colour classic, and busy for it.
- Lutsen Mountains Recreation Area — MP 90.1, up Cook County Road 5 (Ski Hill Road) 2.9 miles. The closest to us and the easiest start: bathrooms, water and a restaurant at the trailhead. Ride the gondola up and walk the ridge down if you'd rather bank the climb.
- Caribou Trail — MP 92.0, up Cook County Road 4 for 4.1 miles, then right on County Road 94 and an immediate left. Outhouse; overnight parking allowed.
- Cascade River Wayside — MP 99.9, straight off the highway. The 8.3-mile Cascade River loop climbs one bank, crosses at County Road 45 (Pike Lake Road) and returns down the other.
If you only do two.
- Oberg Mountain — the one to do if you do nothing else. A 2.3-mile loop around the summit off Onion River Road, with overlook after overlook out to Lake Superior and back over the inland maples. Modest climb, enormous payoff, and manageable for most of a mixed group. In late September and early October it is the fall-colour hike on this shore, which also means the lot fills — go early or go late, and you'll have it far more to yourself.
- Moose Mountain, riding up and walking down — the smart way to get a ridgeline without the climb. Take the Summit Express gondola from Lutsen Mountains, ten minutes from the lodge, then pick up the Superior Hiking Trail spur and walk the ridge back down, roughly 4.5 miles. It suits a group with mixed appetites: some can ride back down instead, and there's food and a bathroom at the top and bottom.
Want a longer day? The Cascade River loop is the one — 8.3 miles up one bank of the gorge, across at Pike Lake Road, and back down the other, with waterfalls most of the way. For short legs, Britton Peak off the Sawbill Trail out of Tofte is a brief, steep climb to an outsized view.
Oberg Mountain Loop — the famous ~2.3-mile fall-color loop off Onion River Rd; moderate, enormous Lake Superior views.
State parks, closest first: Cascade River (the nearest — falls, gorge, ski trails), Temperance River (a short, dramatic gorge walk), Tettegouche (Shovel Point and Baptism River High Falls — the best cliff hiking on the shore), then the southbound classics, Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. Farther north: Judge Magney's Devil's Kettle, the waterfall where half the river drops into a hole (~1.1 mi in, lots of stairs — honest difficulty note), and Grand Portage's High Falls — at 120 feet the highest waterfall in the state, right on the Canadian border, and the one Minnesota state park that's free to enter (no vehicle permit needed).
The scenic drives: the Gunflint Trail — 57 miles from Grand Marais to the edge of the Boundary Waters, moose country, fall-color royalty, with a guide of its own — and Highway 61 itself, laid out stop by stop in the shore-drive guide. For pedals instead of pistons, the paved Gitchi-Gami State Trail: the segment nearest us runs 7.3 miles from the northeast edge of Tofte up to County Road 4 (Ski Hill Road) — so it finishes barely a mile from our turn. It ducks under Highway 61 through a tunnel at County Road 34 and runs on the inland side for a quieter ride: flat, paved, and fine with children.
In town: Artist's Point and the Grand Marais harbor (the walkable heart of it), and the North House Folk School — traditional-craft workshops on the harbor, some day-length, a different kind of itinerary item.
Cross-country skiing (a real strength here)
The Norpine system — 57 km of groomed trail between Ski Hill Rd and the Cascade River — is not a drive from the lodge — it abuts the property. You click in at the edge of the yard and go; no car, no trailhead parking, no loading skis at 7am. For a Nordic skier that is the whole argument for staying here. The pieces worth knowing by name: the Deer Yard Lake trails through maple forest, the Pioneer Loop taking in Lookout Mountain beside Cascade River State Park, and the Hall and Massie loops — the most dramatic elevation in the system, and dual-use for fat bikes. The network runs on into the Cascade River, Bally Creek and Sugarbush systems. For a plowed lot and a warm room at the end, both Cascade Lodge and Solbakken Resort let you click in from their property. The Sugarbush system out of Tofte adds 65 km (Oberg loops, Britton Peak, skijoring loops at Moose Fence). Around 153 km groomed across Lutsen–Tofte in all.
Agate hunting
The Lake Superior agate is Minnesota's state gemstone, and the cobble beaches along this shore are where people hunt for them. Two honest notes. First, collecting is not allowed on state-park beaches — the public waysides and access points along Highway 61 are where you can legitimately fill a pocket, and it is worth reading the signage wherever you stop, because rules differ by landowner. Second, the lodge is not on the water: we sit back in the forest above the lake. The easiest way down to the shore is the public park directly across Highway 61 from Isak Hansen Hardware — a short drive, or a walk down the road if you're inclined. That cobble is where we'd send you with a bucket. Make an afternoon of it rather than expecting to stroll down from the deck.
