Welcome to Nordhus. You have eight acres, five bedrooms, and nowhere to be. This is the guide we'd hand you on arrival — how the lodge works, what's right outside the door, and the North Shore we love. (Your check-in details, Wi-Fi, and house specifics come in your booking message; this page is the fun part.)
The lodge
Nordhus Lodge sits on eight wooded acres of cedar, birch, spruce, and pine above Lutsen, with an extra lot next door for privacy. Inside, an open floor plan puts the dining room, living room, and kitchen under high ceilings and big windows with panoramic Lake Superior views. A fireplace built from locally sourced agates and North Shore rock anchors the great room; hickory floors run throughout. The kitchen is built for a group — black granite counters, full appliances, and a breakfast nook. Five bedrooms sleep twelve, and there's a game room and a deck built for evening fires.
A couple of honest notes: like most North Shore homes, the lodge has no air conditioning — the climate up here runs cool, and the lake breeze does the work. Come prepared for cool evenings even in summer.
Right outside the door
The reason we chose this spot: the Norpine Trail system is about an eighth of a mile downhill and across the road. That's 57 km of groomed terrain for cross-country skiing in winter and hiking and biking the rest of the year — you can step out the door and be on a major trail network in minutes.
Trails & hiking
- Superior Hiking Trail — the "Appalachian Trail of the Midwest," 310 miles along the ridgeline. A favorite loop rides the gondola up Lutsen Mountains to Moose Mountain, then returns via the SHT (~4.5 miles).
- Lutsen Mountains trails — gondola-served high-altitude trailheads through wildflower meadows to overlooks and Poplar River Falls.
- Cascade River State Park (~10–13 miles) — waterfalls and 18 miles of trail.
- Temperance River State Park (~8 miles) — a dramatic river gorge, potholes, and access to Carlton Peak. Mind the edges; guardrails are limited.
Winter on the mountain
Lutsen Mountains is the largest ski area in the Midwest — 1,000 acres across four peaks, 95 runs, ~120 inches of average snow, and the region's only gondola. Beyond downhill: ~400 km of groomed cross-country trails (the Norpine system among them), snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and, on clear nights, the northern lights. The lodge's dedicated ski & snowboard storage keeps your gear organized between days.
Lake Superior & the water
The big lake is famous for agate hunting along the shore, plus kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and fishing for trout and walleye. Inland, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a longer day trip for paddlers (Sawbill Lake access is roughly 27 miles).

Grand Marais
About 20–25 miles up the shore, Grand Marais is a walkable harbor village — shops, galleries, bakeries, and the Art Colony — that's been called "America's Coolest Small Town." An easy afternoon out.
When to come
Every season here is a different trip — prime skiing in deep winter, roaring waterfalls in spring, long trail days in summer, and glorious color in early fall.
