Lutsen Mountains is the Midwest's largest ski and summer resort — and it's about ten minutes, roughly three miles, from the lodge. Four linked mountains, the region's only gondola, and Lake Superior spread out below the runs. You can ski a morning and be back for lunch.
The resort strings together four peaks — Moose, Mystery, Eagle, and Ullr — and runs the Midwest's only gondola, which floats up over the Poplar River valley to the Moose Mountain summit. It's the closest big attraction to Nordhus, and one of the reasons people build a whole trip around this stretch of the North Shore.

Skiing, snowboarding & the terrain parks
In winter Lutsen is downhill skiing and snowboarding across those four linked mountains, plus terrain parks. The season typically runs from late November through early April, snow depending. Nordic skiers don't even need the car: the Norpine 57 km trail system abuts the property, so cross-country skiers push off straight from the lodge's own yard. As a rough guide, adult full-day tickets run about $69 to $89 in value season — early-bird and advance-online pricing lands lower, walk-up window prices higher — and climb to around $119 on peak-season days from late December through March. Multi-day tickets and 3-packs bring the per-day cost down, and tickets are always cheaper bought online in advance.

Summer on the mountain
Gondola, Alpine Slide & lift-served biking
Lutsen doesn't close when the snow melts. In summer the mountain runs gondola sightseeing rides, the Alpine Slide, lift-served mountain biking, and hiking — including Moose Mountain, which you can climb and then ride the gondola back down (more on that in the trail guide). Summer and gondola prices change seasonally, so check current rates before you go.

Where to eat between runs
There's a real cluster of places to eat at and above the base — hours are seasonal, so check before you count on any of them. Papa Charlie's is the base-area tavern with live music; Moguls Grille & Tap Room sits nearby; the Summit Chalet is up top on Moose Mountain at the end of the gondola; and Charlie's Alpine Bistro opened in 2025. Events at the mountain
Two events in particular are worth planning around. The Lutsen 99er in June is a gravel and mountain-bike race with routes up to 99 miles, based right at the mountain. What Lutsen is, and isn't
It isn't the Rockies — and that's the charm: uncrowded, friendly, and hung over big water.
Let's be straight about it. Lutsen is a real mountain by Midwest standards — the most vertical and the most terrain in the region, with Lake Superior views right off the runs. It is not the Rockies, and it doesn't pretend to be. What you get instead is uncrowded, friendly, big-water skiing with none of the scale-and-lift-line stress of a destination resort.
