Everyone comes for two weeks in the autumn and four months in the winter. The stretch in between — roughly mid-October until the lifts spin — is the North Shore with almost nobody on it, and it is the part of the year we would most like you to see.
It is not for everyone, and this guide is as much about what is closed as what is open.
What you get
The case for coming when nobody else does
The trails are yours. The Superior Hiking Trail in late October has no leaves to block the view, which sounds like a loss until you walk a ridge section and can see the lake through the trees the whole way. Oberg and Moose Mountain, the two that queue in September, are simply empty.
The waterfalls are still running, and they are easier to photograph without leaf cover. See our waterfalls guide for which are closest to the lodge.
Grand Marais belongs to the people who live there. You can park on a Saturday. You can get a table. The town in November is the town as it actually is, rather than as it is in July, and a lot of people prefer it — see our Grand Marais guide.
And the tamarack goes gold in the bogs after everything else has gone brown, mid to late October, which is the one colour event most visitors never see because they have already been and gone.
What is closed, honestly
Read this part before you book
This is a summer and ski economy. Between the colour and the snow, a good deal of it stands down:
- Many kitchens cut hours or close entirely. Harbour patios in Grand Marais are reduced or shut. Assume fewer options and confirm before you drive anywhere for dinner.
- The mountain is not running. Lutsen's 2026/27 season is projected to open around 27 November — that figure is a projection, not a promise, so reconfirm with Lutsen before planning around it.
- The gondola and summer operations have finished for the year.
- Some state park facilities reduce services, even where the trails and falls stay open.
If your trip depends on eating out every night, or on a particular attraction being open, this is the wrong window and we would rather tell you now.
What to bring
The weather is the whole story
November on this shore is genuinely cold and often wet before it is properly snowy. The useful kit is waterproof boots with real grip, layers rather than one heavy coat, and a headtorch — the light goes early and the trails are unlit.
Ice is the thing people underestimate. Wet rock near the falls freezes before the paths do. Micro-spikes live in the boot bag from late October onwards.

Which is, frankly, when it is at its best
This is the time of year the lodge earns itself. You come off a cold trail into a house with room to spread out, the fireplace going, and everyone in one place because there is nowhere else anyone wants to be. The game room matters more in November than it does in July.
It is also the cheapest and easiest window to get the whole family under one roof, because you are not competing with ski weekends or summer.

Is it worth visiting the North Shore in November?
Yes, if you want quiet and you are equipped for cold, wet weather. The hiking trails, the waterfalls and Grand Marais are all still there, with almost nobody on them. It is not the right trip if you want a full choice of restaurants or the ski hill running.
When does Lutsen Mountains open for the ski season?
The 2026/27 season is projected to open around 27 November. That is a projection rather than a confirmed date — opening depends on temperatures for snowmaking, so reconfirm directly with Lutsen before you build a trip around it.
Are the waterfalls still running in late October?
Yes. The rivers along this shore run year-round, and without leaf cover the falls are easier to see and photograph. Footing near the water gets icy earlier than the trails do, so bring grip.
What is open near Lutsen in November?
The trails, the state parks and the falls stay open. Restaurant hours thin out considerably and some places close for the season, so check before you drive. Grand Marais keeps the most year-round options in the county.
Is late October too late for fall colours?
For maples and birch, usually yes — those peak from mid-September into early October, and our fall colours guide covers the timing properly. Tamarack is the exception: it turns gold in the bogs mid to late October, after everything else is bare.
