Highway 61 out of Duluth is the decompression chamber: ninety-odd miles of big water on your right, boreal forest on your left. By the time you turn up our road, the city is behind you.
Drive times vary by season. The best-case column is a summer-daylight figure, not a promise. Snow, ice, fog off the lake and the reduced-speed stretches through Tofte and Grand Marais can add anywhere from a few minutes to half again as long. Highway 61 also closes or slows for weather more often than a map suggests — in winter, build in a buffer and check conditions before you set out.
