The northern lights are a different matter: a real possibility on dark, clear nights rather than a fixture, and when they do come it is usually late and worth getting out of bed for.
How to catch it: check the moon phase (you want it dark), watch an aurora app, dress warmer than you think, and give your eyes twenty minutes to adjust. Then look north.
