Winter is the reason a lot of groups come to this stretch of the North Shore, and it is the season Nordhus is built for. The Nordic trails start at the edge of the yard, the downhill is ten minutes on, and the evenings are a fireplace and a game room after the gear comes off.
Two kinds of skiing, one of them at the door
Nordic and downhill
The Norpine Nordic system abuts the property — click in at the yard and you are on 57 km of groomed trail with no drive and no trailhead parking. For a group that includes cross-country skiers, that is the whole argument: the first trail of the day starts at the edge of the lawn.
For downhill, Lutsen Mountains is about 3 miles and 10 minutes away — four linked peaks and the Midwest’s only gondola. The lodge has dedicated ski and snowboard storage by the door, so the wet gear stays out of the living space. See Lutsen Mountains for lift details and the mountain itself.
The roads, honestly
What the last stretch is like
The final approach is a privately maintained gravel road, and North Shore winter weather turns quickly — snow, ice and fog off the lake are all ordinary. A 4WD or AWD vehicle is strongly recommended. Plan the food before you leave. Cook County has one full-size supermarket — Gene’s in Grand Marais, about half an hour away and closed Sundays. In winter especially, bring the bulk of your provisions with you rather than counting on a mid-stay run. See groceries & gear.
The aurora, and the dark
Long nights have a payoff
Winter’s long nights are the trade for the cold, and up here they come with genuinely dark skies. Cook County borders a certified International Dark Sky Sanctuary, and the northern lights are a real, recurring possibility on clear, moonless nights — never promised on a given night, but genuine when they come. When the gear comes off
The evening half of a ski trip
A ski trip is only half days on the snow; the other half is what the house is like at night. Nordhus has a game room with darts, shuffleboard and arcades, a fireplace to thaw out beside, and one long table for a group of up to twelve. The agate fireplace and countertop are the same banded Lake Superior stone the shore is made of — a summer detail that earns its keep in winter, lit against the dark.
Planning a winter stay
The short version
The season runs roughly December through March. Bring an AWD or 4WD vehicle, provision in Duluth or Grand Marais on the way in, and pack for colder than the forecast — the lake makes its own weather. Then the skiing, Nordic and downhill both, is as close as it gets on this coast.
