Eagles Nest sits in Trenton, Maine — on the mainland side, just before the bridge onto Mount Desert Island. That location is the whole trick: you're minutes from Acadia and Bar Harbor, but you sleep on the quiet side of the crossing. Here's how to arrive, and what the drives really take once you're here.
Flying in
There are two airports worth knowing, and for most guests the closer one isn't the right answer.
Bangor International (BGR) is the practical choice for most people. It's about a 50-minute drive (roughly 37.5 miles) from the house and carries the widest schedule of flights, so it's where we'd point you unless the smaller airport happens to line up.
Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) is right here in Trenton — minutes from the house — but it runs regional, seasonal service. If a flight fits your dates, it's the shortest possible hop from tarmac to the bay. If it doesn't, don't force it; fly into Bangor.
Coming from Portland or Boston? Many guests drive up from a bigger airport or the city.
Honest drive times from the house
These are real, door-to-door estimates in normal conditions — not the optimistic version. Treat the midday summer numbers as a floor: the one bridge onto the island can add to any drive that crosses it.

Off-season times are verified against mapping data from the house. The peak-summer figures are midday-worst-case estimates, not a promise: the bridge and Bar Harbor can be worse on a hot Saturday and near-normal at 7am. The rule that beats all of it is simple — cross the bridge early in the morning or after the late-afternoon rush, or leave the car at the Gateway Center and ride the Island Explorer in.
The one-bridge reality
Everything on Mount Desert Island — Acadia, Bar Harbor, Cadillac, the light at Bass Harbor — is reached by a single bridge off the mainland. In summer, all of that traffic funnels across the same span, and midday it backs up. That's why the drive times above are a floor and not a promise: cross at the wrong hour and a 25-minute run can stretch.
Cross early or late
Be over the bridge and onto the island early in the morning — while the day-trippers are still on the road — or hold your crossing for the evening. The middle of the day is exactly when the bridge, and the parking on the far side, are at their worst.
Skip the pinch: park and ride
The smartest way around both the bridge crawl and the parking hunt is to not drive onto the island at all. The Acadia Gateway Center, a new 11,000-square-foot transit and visitor hub that opened in Trenton in 2025, is about 18 minutes from the house. It has around 300 free day-use parking spaces (with EV chargers), restrooms, park information, and it is the mainland launch point for the fare-free Island Explorer shuttle into the park and Bar Harbor. Leave the car there, ride in, and let someone else deal with the bridge and the parking spots that vanish by mid-morning.
The shuttle is seasonal and the timetable shifts through the year, so check the current routes and departure times on the official Island Explorer schedule. In 2026 the Gateway Center route starts May 20, running roughly every 30 minutes, and steps up to about every 20 minutes once full summer service begins June 23; confirm before you build a morning on it.
Provision on the way in
Ellsworth is about 12 minutes out and it's the last real town before the house — so it's where you stock up.
