Mount Desert Island — MDI to locals — is the heart of the Acadia region. It holds most of the national park, the town of Bar Harbor, and the quieter villages of Northeast and Southwest Harbor. Everyone reaches it the same way: across the bridge from the mainland gateway at Trenton.
Explore Acadia National Park
The obvious headliner. Drive the Park Loop Road, walk or bike the carriage roads, and hike to a granite summit or around Jordan Pond. Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain is the signature outing.
Spend an evening in Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor is the island's hub for dining, shops, and boat tours. It's the easy choice for a night out and a harbor walk.
Visit the quieter villages
Northeast and Southwest Harbor sit on the calmer side of the island — working harbors, gardens, and a slower pace that's worth a half-day.
Get on the water
Whale-watching trips, sailing, and scenic cruises leave from island harbors and are a great way to see the coast from a different angle.
Eat the coast
Lobster shacks, bakeries, and harbor-side spots are part of the experience. Build a meal or two around them.
Base at the gateway
