This is where we keep a running, seasonal orientation to the North Shore — the kind of thing we'd tell a friend heading up. It's not news; it's the rhythm of the year and the handful of things worth checking before a trip. We refresh it a few times a season, and every update carries a date.
The shape of the year
Winter is the headline: Lutsen Mountains runs the largest ski area in the Midwest, and the Norpine trails right below the lodge groom up for cross-country. Deep snow and cold, long fireside nights. Spring is mud-and-melt — quiet, cheap, and the waterfalls run hard. Summer brings long days for hiking, biking, and the lake, with the busiest stretch in July and August. Early fall is our favorite: crisp air, thinning crowds, and color arriving late September into early October.

Worth checking before you come
A few things change season to season, so confirm the current details rather than assuming:
- Lutsen Mountains operating dates and the snow report in winter and spring.
- Road and trail conditions on Highway 61 and the Superior Hiking / Norpine networks, especially in mud season and early winter.
- Peak weekends in Grand Marais and around festivals, which fill up.
