Almost all of Acadia is first-come and open to you the moment you buy an entrance pass. There is exactly one exception, and it's the thing that trips people up: to drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, you need a timed vehicle reservation. This is how to actually get one.
What's required, and what isn't
The Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation is required from May 20 to October 25, 2026, costs $6 per vehicle, and is sold only in advance on Recreation.gov — never at the gate. It is separate from, and on top of, your park entrance pass. Everywhere else — the Park Loop Road, the trails, the carriage roads, Jordan Pond, Schoodic, the Quiet Side — needs no timed ticket at all.
The two-wave ticket drop
Reservations release in two waves, and knowing the timing is the whole game:
- 90 days ahead, 10:00 a.m. ET — ~30% of tickets
- 2 days ahead, 10:00 a.m. ET — remaining ~70%
The play that actually works
Most people miss the 90-day window — so the two-day drop is the realistic move. Set an alarm for 10:00 a.m. Eastern, exactly two days before the date you want. Be logged in to Recreation.gov a few minutes early, with your payment method saved and your date and time window already decided. When the clock turns, you're booking, not fumbling for a password. Tickets for a popular summer date can move in minutes.
Want the view, not the 4 a.m. alarm?
Sunrise slots are the scarcest — famous, and limited to one per week per person. If you mainly want to stand on the summit, book a daytime window instead; they're far easier to land. And sunset (plus the hour after) is nearly as beautiful as sunrise, much easier to reserve, and doesn't cost you a pre-dawn wake-up.
Rules that trip people up
- Each reservation is one entry only — no re-entry. Plan to go up and come down once.
- Vehicles over 21 feet aren't allowed on the summit road — and a bike rack counts if it pushes you over the limit.
- Acadia is cashless, and cell service on the mountain is unreliable. Save your reservation QR code offline before you drive up.
If it's sold out — the workarounds
The reservation is only for driving up. No ticket is needed to reach the summit on foot, by bike, or by taxi/rideshare — the North Ridge and South Ridge trails both top out at the summit. And if driving is the goal, a daytime or sunset window is almost always available even when sunrise is long gone. (Note: the Island Explorer shuttle does not serve the summit road.)
Why the base makes it easier
An early or sunset summit slot is only worth it if you can reach the gate without a fight. From Eagles Nest in Trenton — the mainland gateway town just before the bridge to Mount Desert Island — you're a short drive from the Hulls Cove entrance, so you can make your window ahead of the day-trippers and be back on your own quiet rocky shore by afternoon.

Do you need a reservation for Cadillac Mountain?

Is the summit reservation separate from the park entrance pass?
Yes — it is separate from, and on top of, your Acadia entrance pass. The entrance pass gets you into the park; the timed vehicle reservation is what lets you drive the summit road during the season.
Can you cancel or change a Cadillac Mountain reservation?
Reservations are booked and managed on Recreation.gov, and the current cancellation and change terms are shown there at the time of booking — check them before you reserve. If your plans shift, a daytime or sunset window is usually still available to rebook, since those are far easier to get than sunrise.
What happens if you miss your reservation window?
