Coastal Maine weather changes fast, and the shoreline is granite, not sand. Pack for cool mornings, warm afternoons, and the occasional fog or shower — and you'll be ready for whatever the day brings.
Layers, always
- A warm mid-layer (fleece or light down) even in summer — mornings and evenings by the water run cool.
- A waterproof, wind-resistant shell for fog and passing showers.
- Quick-dry shirts and pants for hiking; you'll warm up fast on the trail.
Footwear
- Sturdy hiking shoes or boots with grip — Acadia's trails and shoreline are rocky and can be slick.
- Water-friendly sandals or shoes for the beach and boat trips.
- Comfortable walking shoes for town and the carriage roads.
For the park
- A daypack with water and snacks.
- Sun protection — hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. The coastal sun is stronger than it feels.
- Bug protection in early summer, especially near ponds and woods.
- A camera or binoculars for wildlife and the coastline.
