Grand Marais sits at the northern end of Minnesota's North Shore, where the forest meets Lake Superior and the Gunflint Trail heads inland toward the Boundary Waters. For a small town, it packs in a lot — art, food, water, and trails — which makes it the natural day trip from a lodge farther down the shore.
Walk the harbor and the breakwater
Start at the harbor. The rock breakwater leads out to the lighthouse, with Lake Superior on one side and the working harbor on the other. It's the classic first stop and a good way to get your bearings.
Explore the arts scene
Grand Marais has an outsized creative community for its size, anchored by the Grand Marais Art Colony and a cluster of galleries and studios along the main streets. Budget an hour to wander.
Eat well
The town is known for its bakeries and casual, high-quality food. Grab a pastry in the morning, a lakeside lunch, and something warm before the drive back.
Head up the Gunflint Trail
If you have more time, the Gunflint Trail climbs inland from town toward the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness — a scenic drive with trailheads, lakes, and outfitters along the way.
Chase waterfalls on the way
The drive between Grand Marais and the Lutsen area passes several state parks with short hikes to waterfalls. It's worth building an extra half-hour into the trip to stop.
Where to base your trip
Grand Marais is easiest as a day trip from a home base farther down the shore.
